In 2013, a childhood friend introduced us to the world of adult kickball. To say we were skeptical would be an understatement—after all, we grew up playing what we considered “real sports” like basketball and football. But after some reluctance, we decided to check out one of his games, and what we experienced completely blew us away. The energy, the competition, and the community were unlike anything we expected. Inspired by what we saw, we set out to bring the same excitement to Charlotte, NC.
With little experience and no real blueprint, we took a leap of faith and launched an adult kickball league. It was truly the blind leading the blind, but despite the challenges, we successfully ran a full six-week season. Building on that momentum, we organized a special weekend tournament, initially expecting it to attract only local teams. However, to our surprise, teams traveled from Georgia, Virginia, and Tennessee to participate. This unexpected response was a turning point—we realized that our reach extended far beyond our city, and the demand for high-quality kickball tournaments was greater than we had imagined.
After hosting a successful national weekend tournament, we discovered that out-of-town teams were eager for us to bring our events to their markets. Recognizing the opportunity, we built relationships in key regions and expanded our tournaments nationwide.
By 2022, just two years after expanding, a game-changing opportunity emerged—Turf Wars was invited to air on ESPN. This milestone was a testament to the incredible community we had built. The following year, we secured a prime-time slot on the network, and in 2024, we solidified our place in sports history by signing a streaming deal with ESPN3.
Today, Turf Wars stands as the #1 adult kickball tournament brand in the country, the most trusted name in the sport, and the first and only kickball organization to be showcased on ESPN in its entirety. We continue to push the boundaries, unite communities, and elevate the game of kickball to new heights.
